'Faith Etc.'

" When I state myself as the representative of the verse, it does not mean
me, but a 'supposed person'. " -Emily Dickinson (Letters)

Now, there are some --the doubters and the flouters-- who regard the
likelihood of being born-again with so much mirth,
--they won't be laughing though, when the rapture comes and they're
left standing, shrinking, blinking, on a smoking chunk of earth!!--

but, I digress, renascimento's what I'm really pondering,
not those someday sorry souls of lesser worth,
you see my preacher says you can be born-again 'Kinda gradual-like',
that it's not always 'All at once' with lots of halleluias, cryin', and grinnin',

He says sometimes it can happen so darn slow that you don't even know
that you've been saved, so you might just keep on enjoyin' sinnin',
until it catches up with you that is, and one day as you're walkin' out
the door
you say: "Oh! I get it! I've been saved! I guess I won't be sinnin' anymore."

Anyway, I was jest thinkin', "Lord, if you're gonna have me born again,
and for awhile I'll have to hang around all these good-lookin' sinners here on Earth,
Can't you help me twice, and do something nice about my excess girth?"

'Flame' (from: 'Notes To J.D.' 3-23-03)

A flashing, blazing, fiery, hue

pure energy and passion,

But sometimes

slower, lower,

blue,

all tenderness, compassion,

An uncommon hero with a pistol on your thigh,

A tough-tender enigma, who can kick ass
and then cry.

You make it very clear to all that your boots

are made for walkin'

until you take them off that is,

and let your armor fall,

and then sweet

sweet talkin.'

--jorge999

'Posie'( From 'Notes to J.D' )

Tall, and strong,
A very curious
kind of flower,

that will not wilt
with just the sweetness
of an hour;

You wilt not,
Though this storm
would have you cower,

battered, yes. . .
but standing,

like a beacon tower.

'On Your Birthday' (For Sarah)

I’ll add my small appurtenance to this agglomeration
and say you’ve earned a boodle of familial adoration,

unlike the Lally usual --the verbose circumbendus--
this will be brief [ “Ha, ha, that’s rich!” ] I swear by my suspendahs,

Oh happy day! good luck! Good health! -- each wish to you I send,
My clever, caring, lovely niece: a Lally-Victor blend.

'RETURNING TO THE FOLD --AGAIN'

Undulating piles of sordid duds
outstretched upon my bedroom rug

hung over chairs
bearing all the stench and stains,

worldly accretions, and body-secretions,
wrinkled, malodorous

--like tired aging sinners
yearning to be cleansed!

each week the sacrament begins anew,
each week they’re born again:

industrial strength baptism
at $1.75 a load,

yet even as I fold them now, I see the future clear:
they’ll be soiled, and they’ll be saved,
then they’ll be pure and bright,
and I’ll be folding them again, next week on Wednesday night

First calls to students who spearheaded Hampshire divestment came from an angered Alan Dershowitz

( from MONDOWEISS 2/14/09 )

... Immediately after Hampshire College announced they had divested from the Israeli occupation, there was another story that Professor Alan Dershowitz had made threatening phone calls to students who had worked to pass the divestment. This seemed like an odd story - how would Dershowitz get student's private phone numbers? And while he might be expected to create a media circus out of this, would he really try to harass and intimidate students?

Ends up that he would. Below is a written description of the events of the morning of Thursday, February 12, the morning of the divestment announcement. This was written by Brian Van Slyke and it also mentions another Hampshire student, Matan Cohen. Cohen is an Israeli activist who has done amazing work to protest the separation wall in the West Bank. I know of Cohen because he was shot in the face by the Israeli military at a nonviolent protest in the village of Bil'in. Sounds like Dershowitz is familiar with him as well.

Brian Van Slyke:

It was Thursday morning and we had just broken to the press. Already we were terrified, mind you we were about to take on one of the world's most powerful political machines. What's more is that we were a little unprepared, as a local newspaper was coming out with the story a day early and so we had to go all out sooner than we expected (lest the media pick up on the story for a full day without our voices out there).

I woke up a little later than I had planned on. I knew we were about to get flooded with phone calls from the media and I didn't want them to wake me up and not be ready for their questions. Already people were running around the house, pacing with nervousness, on the phone with the media and arguing in Hebrew, or in the bathroom about to lose their breakfast.

Soon, everyone left but Matan and I. I came out of my room after responding to some e-mails from reporters and Matan came up to me:

"Brian, I just got off the phone with Alan Dershowitz."

I was still a little tired, and I didn't quite get it. "Wait, who?"

"Alan Dershowitz"

This woke me up. "What did he say?"

Matan smiled, "He said: I should have known you were involved. Then he went on to say he's going to organize a boycott of me and of the college."

"Oh." We knew we might be hearing from Dershowitz, but certainly not only after an hour or so of being out to the press. That was a little intimidating. "How did he get your number?" I asked. Matan didn't know.

About 20 minutes later I got a call from Andrew, another SJPer. "Listen, Brian, I just got a call from Alan Dershowitz. He's threatening to organize an international divestment campaign of Hampshire."

"What does that even mean?" I asked. Andrew didn't know.

A little bit later, I got a phone call. I thought it was my first reporter. I grabbed the cell phone, started pacing, and answered.

"Hello, Brian?"

"Yes."

"Hi, this is Professor Alan Dershowitz. I'm calling to find out if Hampshire College divested from Israel."

My heart sank. I was not ready for this. I stumbled: "I don't know, you should read our press release. Which I also think says we divested from the Israeli occupation, not Israel."

"I have read your press release. And I'm asking you."

"Okay, well look, I don't think I'm going to talk to you about this."

"Wh-"

"Listen, I'm not going to talk to you. Sorry, bye." Click. I hung up the phone. I called up the stairs to Matan:

"Matan... I think I just did something bad. I think I just hung up on Alan Dershowitz."

"Good," Matan replied....

IT'S TIME TO CHANGE THE SENATE RULES

I never thought i would say this but IT'S TIME TO CHANGE THE SENATE RULES and allow a simple majority to decide --the same as in the house.

Otherwise, at a time of national emergency the Senate will have to kowtow to the so-called 'Republican Moderates' who can continue to blackmail the dems and exercise veto power over desperately needed legislation.

The Senate rule permitting unlimited debate unless 60 votes are cast to invoke cloture has been a sacred cow among democrats for too long.

It's time to end it

They want to worship Limbaugh but then claim he doesn't represent them.

I LOVE this

http://kstatecollegian.com/1.1355385-1.1355385

Limbaugh is not merely 'An entertainer'. that is his all-purpose excuse whenever he puts his foot in his mouth or says something that embarrasses republican politicians.

The truth is he is a skilled polemicist and the republicans most prominent spokesperson.

Millions of 'Dittohead' republicans take Limbaugh's opinions as holy writ. Accordingly, we need to hang him around their necks like an albatross.

When Obama told the republican members of congresss that they shouldn't be trying to govern according to Limbaugh's dictates, the talking heads said he was making a mistake, he was raising Limbaugh up, putting him on a level with the
presidency blah, blah, blah ...etc.

MY instinct was that the guys with the $500. shoes -- ie. the pundits-- were WRONG.

It was, in fact, a very smart thing for Obama to do. He is helping the moderates, independents, women voters et al to see clearly what the republican party has become. They now represent a small narrow, mostly regional, party of angry
rednecks, religious fundamentalists and conservative radicals. they are the party of Ann Coulter, Mark Levin, and Sean Hannity. Limbaugh IS their spokeman if not their PROPHET.

The clearer that is to the great American middle, the more they will be repulsed.
