For your anniversary
a footling sum I spent,
I bought a silly little card,
and now it has been sent,
Oh, on that bubble wrap you rub,
I'd pour a potent philter,
brewed to make you love the more
when all has gone a-kilter!
but spells and hexes, charms and such,
however well intended,
and secret potions made for you,
though cleverly their blended,
can't do what each of you must do
so you won't be up-ended.
Love and Best Wishes,
-Dad

An Email to My Daughter
Dear S.
The whole Republican campaign is shameless, and nauseating.
It is geared to ignorant and 'low information' voters -- ie. they are trying to turn it into a contest of personalities and/or a referendum on Obama.
It's a campaign of DISTRACTION, designed to keep voters from reflecting on the Republicans' abysmal record of governing the country.
That is the (evil) genius behind the Palin selection...ie. keep voters thinking about the so-called 'soccer mom' who can shoot a gun and skin a moose
(or on Obama as an "Elitist' or 'Celebrity') and NOT on what Bush, McCain, Cheney, et al have been doing these past seven years or so.
They have, after all, controlled BOTH the presidency and the Congress for most of the past seven and a half years!! They have given us the Iraq war, the Katrina debacle, hemmoraging (sp?) deficits, right wing anti-choice supreme court justices, a politicized Justice Department, frightening breaches of basic constitutional rights of privacy and due process. They have given us an 'Imperial Presidency' which believes it is above the laws and can nullify any law or portion of it that they wish --sometimes openly and sometimes secretly.
During their seven years in power they virtually MERGED the Republican party with special interests and lobbyists. Eg. Cheney's secret meetings with oil company executives early on, to literally WRITE the Administration's energy legislation. Cheney then refused to reveal even the attendance lists of those meetings...and fought it to the Supreme Court! .....Don't get me started on the housing and mortgage crises and their basis in a laissez-faire, 'musn't-ever-regulate' mentality.
John McCain has over 150 lobbyists working in his campaign, starting with his very closest advisors, yet they shamelessly run AGAINST the 'Washington Elite'!
....I may vomit.
Anyway, apart from my heartburn over politics, I'm fine.
Looking forward to seeing you next month!
